According to Section 409(h)(1)(C) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, food contact substance notifications (FCNs) are effective only for the listed manufacturer and its customers. Other manufacturers must submit their own FCN for the same food contact substance and intended use.
Food Contact Substance: 1,5-Cyclooctadiene (CAS Reg. No. 111-78-4).
Notifier: UBE Industries, Ltd.
Manufacturer/Supplier: Degussa-Huls Corp.
Intended Use: As a molecular weight modifier in the manufacture of polybutadiene which will be used in the production of high-impact polystyrene for food-contact use.
Limitations/Specifications: As a component of polystyrene and rubber modified polystyrene as provided in 21 CFR 177.1640(a)(2). The finished rubber modified polystyrene food contact articles will not contain more than 8 weight percent polybutadiene and be no thicker than 0.07 cm. The residual level of 1,5-Cyclooctadiene in the polybutadiene will not exceed 250 ppm.
