New Plant Variety Consultations

Consultations listed on these pages are the subjects of a voluntary premarket engagement between FDA and the developer of the new plant variety under FDA’s 1992 Statement of Policy: Foods Derived from New Plant Varieties. The goal of the consultation is to ensure that food safety or regulatory questions about food from the new variety are resolved prior to market entry. As part of the consultation process, a developer who intends to commercialize a new plant variety meets with the agency to identify and discuss relevant safety, nutritional, or other regulatory issues regarding food from the new variety, then submits to FDA a summary of its scientific and regulatory assessment of the food. FDA evaluates the submission and responds to the developer by letter. Manufacturers or purveyors of food have a legal obligation to produce safe, lawful food, regardless of whether a developer of a new plant variety voluntarily consults with FDA prior to marketing.

This inventory does not capture all new plant varieties that may have been introduced; however, foods produced using newer development techniques, such as genetic engineering, have been the subject of consultations with FDA prior to marketing. We intend to update this inventory within one month after completing a consultation.

See "Final Biotechnology Consultations" for a description of the information categories available in this inventory.

Select the entries in the Designation column for further details on food from each plant line, including links to FDA's memos and letters.

  • To search for a specific term, enter the term in the Search box and select Show Items to display only those records that contain the selected term. (The search results also includes terms not shown on this page, but included in the full record on the detail page.). You may select "Field Search" also search within several of the fields present in the column headers.
  • The search results will return hits of records containing words that include the search term. For example, a search for the color red will return results that include terms such as reduce and altered. To limit results to only the searched term, place a space before and after the word in the basic search or in the advanced search “this exact phrase” field.
