According to Section 409(h)(1)(C) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, food contact substance notifications (FCNs) are effective only for the listed manufacturer and its customers. Other manufacturers must submit their own FCN for the same food contact substance and intended use.
Food Contact Substance: Hypobromous acid (CAS Reg. No. 13517-11-8) generated on-site from an aqueous mixture of sodium bromide (CAS Reg. No. 7647-15-6) and sodium, potassium or calcium hypochlorite (CAS Reg. Nos. 7681-52-9, 7778-66-7 or 7778-54-3).

Intended Use: As an antimicrobial agent in process water or ice applied to meat and poultry products, and in water applied to processed fruits and vegetables, and shell eggs.
Limitations/Specifications: For use at a level not to exceed that needed to provide available bromine: (1) 900 ppm in water or ice applied to meat products, (2) 200 ppm in water or ice applied to poultry products, (3) 900 ppm in water applied to processed fruits and vegetables, and (4) 500 ppm in water applied to shell eggs.
