How does the Reportable Food Registry Work?

The Reportable Food Registry (RFR) is now part of the FDA-NIH Safety Reporting Portal. New, user-friendly software offers conveniences to reporters to the RFR. Reports can be pre-populated with contact information and saved as drafts or partially completed reports. Users can now also view any previous submissions they have made to the Safety Reporting Portal.

Instructions for completing the Reportable Food electronic portal screens are available at the link "Instructions" on every Reportable Food electronic portal screen. In addition, Guidance for Industry - Questions and Answers Regarding the Reportable Food Registry as Established by the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 is available on the FDA.gov website.

In emergencies, consumers, food retailers and food service operators should continue to call FDA at 1-866-300-4374 or 301-796-8240. For less urgent problems, contact the FDA consumer complaint coordinator in your geographic area or see Your Guide To Reporting Problems to FDA. Calling the FDA district office and state or local health officials does not relieve the responsible party of the responsibility to submit an electronic report as soon as practicable but in no case later than 24 hours after determining that an article of food is a reportable food as specified under Section 417(d)(1) of the FD&C Act.
