According to Section 409(h)(1)(C) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, food contact substance notifications (FCNs) are effective only for the listed manufacturer and its customers. Other manufacturers must submit their own FCN for the same food contact substance and intended use.
Food Contact Substance: Styrene/ butadiene/ acrylonitrile copolymers (SBAN) (CAS Reg. No., exclusive of minor monomers, is 9003-56-9), copolymerized with not more than 10 percent of one or more of the monomers of acrylic acid, fumaric acid, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, itaconic acid and methacrylic acid, manufactured according to the method described in this notification.

Manufacturer/Supplier: The Dow Chemical Company, Trinseo LLC and Styron Holding B.V.
Intended Use: As a component of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods, complying with 21 CFR 176.170(b)(2).
Limitations/Specifications: The copolymers are intended for use in latex coatings. The finished polymer will contain no more than 30 weight percent acrylonitrile and not more than 10 weight percent of total polymer units derived from minor monomers listed above. The SBAN latex copolymers shall contain no more than 100 ppm of residual styrene monomer in the wet latex.
