FCN No. 166

Arakawa Chemical Industries, Ltd.

According to Section 409(h)(1)(C) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, food contact substance notifications (FCNs) are effective only for the listed manufacturer and its customers. Other manufacturers must submit their own FCN for the same food contact substance and intended use.
Food Contact Substance: Aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon resin, hydrogenated (CAS Reg. No. 88526-47-0), produced by the catalytic polymerization of aromatic substituted olefins from low boiling distillates of cracked petroleum stocks with a boiling point no greater than 220°C (428°F), and the subsequent catalytic reduction of the resulting aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon resin.
Notifier: Arakawa Chemical Industries, Ltd.
Manufacturer/Supplier: Arakawa Chemical Industries, Ltd.
Intended Use: As a component in blends with other polymers that are used in the manufacture of food-contact materials.
Limitations/Specifications: The finished resin has a minimum softening point of 110°C (230°F) as determined by ASTM Method E 28-67 (Reapproved 1982), "Standard Test Method for Softening Point by Ring-and-Ball Apparatus", and a minimum aniline point of 107°C (224.5°F) as determined by ASTM Method D 611-82, "Standard Test Methods for Aniline Point and Mixed Aniline Point of Petroleum Products and Hydrocarbon Solvents." The resin may be blended with other polymers at levels not to exceed 25 percent by weight of the total polymer, used in contact with food types I, II, IV-B, VI-A, VI-B, VI-C, VII-B and VIII, identified in Table 1, under Conditions of Use A through H identified in Table 2.
