According to Section 409(h)(1)(C) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, food contact substance notifications (FCNs) are effective only for the listed manufacturer and its customers. Other manufacturers must submit their own FCN for the same food contact substance and intended use.
Food Contact Substance: Amorphous hydrogenated carbon coating produced from acetylene as the carbon source in a microwave plasma. The coating is formed at reduced pressure with 0.1 mbar using acetylene microwave energy, followed by an air rinse.

Intended Use: A technology used to produce an amorphous hydrogenated carbon coating for food-contact containers to provide an improved barrier to permeation of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle by oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other substances.
Limitations/Specifications: The amorphous hydrongenated carbon coating is intended for use at a level not to exceed approximately 0.15 microns thick (0.006 mil) and may be used in contact with food types I through IX, under Conditions of Use A through H, as described in Tables 1 and 2.
